U.S. Travel Association Primer on Climate Change and the Travel Community (June 2008)
Profound environmental and societal changes have triggered a shift in public policy thinking regarding climate change. The travel and tourism industry's traditional non-engagement on this issue is no longer acceptable. The industry has much at stake in the policy conversations being held on climate change today at all levels of government; federal, state and local.  How the industry meets these environmental challenges will go a long way toward defining how it manages the concomitant costs and burdens associated with the new law.  The need for a united industry approach to climate change is most timely. This document includes:  (1) An overview of the current political climate; (2)  A summary of where the travel community stands in the current debate; (3) An analysis of the potential impact of current legislation; (4) An assessment of the travel community's vulnerabilities in the environmental debate; (5) A synopsis of the travel community's opportunities; and (6) Best practices within the travel community.
